The Green Room Restaurant by James Nathan at Retallack Resort and Spa

The Green Room Restaurant at Retallack Resort & Spa welcomes both resort guests and visitors and serves lunch and dinner in a beautiful setting with roaring fire for Winter warmth and floor to ceiling windows letting the Summer sunshine flood in.

Our Executive Chef is no ordinary Chef, he is James Nathan, MasterChef 2008 Winner, a Barrister turned Chef extraordinaire. James draws on his love for Cornwall and his passion for surfing to inspire his crisp, invigorating dishes making the menu exciting and innovative. Take a look at some of our sample menus below.

From our Evening Menu which features the MasterChef winning dish to a gourmet 7 course tasting menu, James Nathan's food is getting rave reviews so make sure you book soon.

About James Nathan

James Nathan Surfing Chef

With an impressive CV behind him, James Nathan won the BBC's Amateur MasterChef competition in 2008, after throwing in his job as a barrister to pursue his dream profession. Since then he has worked in some of the most famous kitchens in Europe, including Michel Roux Jr's, Michael Caines', Michel and Sebastian Bras' and Rick Stein's. James enjoys simple flavour combinations and has a minimalistic style which is why he is attracted to the rugged simplicity of rural Cornwall: 'I'll be drawing on my experience of working with some of the top chefs in theworld, but also taking inspiration from the fantastic local produce on our doorstep here on the north Cornwall coast.'

About The Green Room Menus

Cornish produce is incredibly varied and James describes the county as a 'superb natural larder' from which he can source meat, shellfish, fish and vegetables all freshly and organically cultivated nearby to create a delicious and impressive array of dishes. Favourites include his speciality crab linguini with chilli, lemon grass, sea lettuce and coconut, Porthilly mussels with Camel Valley wine and oyster sauce, the popular scallops, mango salsa, lime, coriander, black sesame and coconut, not to mention his MasterChef winning dish: chicken ballotine, porcini mushrooms, mash potatoes, spinach and carrots in a Madeira sauce. An avid supporter of local businesses and artisan producers, James is supremely interested in the provenance of food and the exceptional quality of his ingredients, clearly evident in his dishes

Why not sample a little taste of all James Nathan's dishes? Every Thursday, we run our Tasting Menu night from 6:30pm-9pm filled with seven delicious courses cooked by the MasterChef winner himself.

Family Dining at The Green Room

Family Restaurant North Cornwall

Families are welcome at The Green Room and we offer a choice of healthy, yummy dishes for children to enjoy such as Cottage Pie in little ramekins. In the evening, families might feel more comfortable dining early so we open from 5.00pm for convenience.

Families with young children might find it helpful to use our supervised Movie Nights (Thursday night in term time and more often in School Holidays) so that they can enjoy a more adult atmosphere in The Green Room and spend some quality time together as a couple while the children are entertained by our registered child carers. For children under 2 years we can help you arrange one of our trusted babysitters. Mealtimes should be wonderful family occasions and our staff can provide highchairs for little ones but we do ask that children are respectful of the other diners.

Every Thursday evening from 5pm-6pm The Green Room offers a Kids Only hour, where adults have the chance to feed their children before Movie Night begins.

A bit more about The Green Room

Why The Green Room? According to 'surf dictionary' definition, The Green Room, referring to inside the barrel of a wave, is a great place to be – and when you dine with us we think that you'll agree.

The restaurant has been designed by Steve Coombe from 3iDog, a local interior designer and a member of the Cornwall Design Guild. He involved fellow members, Jen Larkin from Arteye, who was our art buyer and Claire Pendarves from Illumina Lighting who sourced the stylish 'Artichoke Shades'.

Our bespoke resin bar top was designed and made by local surfboard maker, Luke Hart, from Fourth Surfboards, using materials from the manufacturing of surf boards. The final homage to our surfing Chef are the upcycled surf board which have been upholstered and hang from the ceiling in a myriad of green material. Continuing with the Made in Cornwall theme, Linterior Design of Wadebridge, has made our beautiful curtains. Sourcing local suppliers is important to Retallack Resort and Spa.
