Why we are doing it

Precious Lives AppealAt Children’s Hospice South West we care for children who have illnesses which mean they will die before reaching adulthood. We provide expert care for them, their parents and well siblings

We are now in the process of raising funds through our Precious Lives Appeal to build our third hospice, in Cornwall, it will be called Little Harbour.

Since the Precious Lives Appeal was launched in September 2007 we set about locating the perfect site on which to build the children's hospice and, thanks to the very generous donation of a local farmer, we were delighted to announce in June 2008 that we have one.

The beautiful site, just off Porthpean Road on the outskirts of St Austell, meets all of our criteria and will offer equal accessibility for families from West Cornwall and Plymouth.  It is this location that has given us the inspiration for the name of our new hospice.

Taken from one of the translations of the Cornish name Porthpean, we have chosen to call our special third hospice Little Harbour, which is wonderfully apt for such a homely and caring place.

We were pleased to confirm in March 2009 that planning permission to build Little Harbour has been granted.  Our plans received a ringing endorsement from Restormel Borough Council and this decision was quickly backed by the Government Office for the South West.

In March 2010 we were delighted to announce that Midas Construction has been appointed to build our new children's hospice.  The construction company plan to start work on the site this Spring and, all being well , it is hoped that Little Harbour will open its doors to the first families by the end of 2011
